Orthognathic Surgeries

What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is surgery in which the position of the jaws is changed in cases where the lower jaw and upper jaw are positioned forward or backward.

Orthognathic surgery may also be needed in other treatments such as changing gingival visibility, eliminating facial asymmetries, eliminating facial disproportions and changing the position of the chin tip. In addition to restoring chewing functions, these surgeries also may have positive aesthetic results and provide psychological and social benefits to patients.

Orthognathic surgeries require a high level of experience and the ability to use a wide range of maxillofacial surgical equipment. With the development of current methods, the jaws do not need to be connected to each other with steel wires after surgery. Our patients can start feeding with soft foods after surgery and can continue their normal lives within a few months as if they have never had surgery.

What I say to all my patients: Orthognathic surgeries are difficult for a tooth extraction but easy for another surgery. You are not the first patient to undergo this surgery, nor are we the first physician to perform this surgery. Even now, hundreds of people around the world are undergoing this operation. Of course, like any surgery, it has its own risks, for example, there is a risk of fracture in the jawbone even during a tooth extraction.

Orthognathic surgery operations are performed under general anesthesia and are followed by a one or two nights hospital stay. All of our patients come to the clinic in a way that they can control themselves after they are discharged, and they are in good enough condition to have photographs and radiographs taken. Therefore, these surgeries are not difficult surgeries.

Orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery are not the same, they are different disciplines, but these two disciplines have to work together in preparation for mid-genetic surgery. Orthodontics is an important discipline for the success of the surgery before and after the surgical preparation, these surgeries provide great benefits to the patients both aesthetically, functionally and psychologically. Evaluation of each patient separately is carried out by these two disciplines for the realization of fascial harmony.
